One of JP Dutta's earliest films. Extremely unwatchable. The kind of film that makes you demand the inclusion of films within the ambit of Consumer Protection Act. And this is inspite of having Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Dharmendra, Naseeruddin Shah, Mithun and Smita Patil in this film. Enough of my ranting. There are some interesting lines, however, which Jaabar i.e. Mithun has in this film. Click on the label 'Ghulami' or search using the search box for other lines from this film.

Jaabar's (Mithun) animals have strayed from their normal grazing route, and he now has to round them up. Obviously this is hard work and an angry Jaabar curses his animals while rounding them up. His girl friend Tulsi (Anita Raj) is slightly embarrassed and chides him for swearing in her presence. She says that he should be ashamed of his action.

Jabar says

"Sharm to ladkiyon kaa gehnaa hai agar mujhe sharm aane lagegee to tere aur mere me.n farq kyaa reh jaayegaa"

"शर्म तो लड़कियों का गहना है, अगर मुझे शर्म आने लगेगी तो तेरे और मेरे में फर्क़ क्या जायेगा"

These are lines which are unapologetically macho. A far cry from today's androgenous generation where the gender lines seem to have blurred. You might agree with them or disagree with them, but you cannot ignore them.

Ranjit Singh has become an outlaw. His childhood friend Sumitra tries to broker peace (she has now married a police officer) and arranges a meeting with Ranjit to try and convince him to give up the path of armed resistance. Ranjit Singh is reluctant to do so. Sumitra gives him the logic that is beautifully brought out in this quotation

"The trouble with being a pioneer is that you get shot by Red Indians"

She says

"Barsaat ki pehlii boond ko taptii huii zameen par gir kar fana honaa hi paRtaa hai'"

Jab shaadi karne ke liye taiyyaar hooN to maut se kyaa Darnaa

Rasik Lal goes to meet Alpana (Kalpana's sister played by Prema Narayan). He is in love with Alpana and wants to marry her. But Kalpana is upto her pranks as usual. She gets two neighbourhood kids to call Alpana their mother. A visibly confused Rasik asks

31 Carter Road yahee hai?

३९ कार्टर रोड यही है ?

Kalpana further says that Alpana's first husband is slightly unhinged and can kill on an impulse. Rasik gets scared and runs away. When he later realises that it was Kalpana's prank, he goes back. When Kalpana sees him coming back, she once again tries to spin her old story. She says that Alpana's first husband would kill him. But this time Rasik doesn't fall for it. He says,

जब शादी करने के लिए तैयार हूँ तो मौत से क्या डरना

Jab shaadii karne ke liye taiyyaar hooN to maut se kyaa Darnaa

Yeh ...to peT meN daaDhee rakhtee hai

Kalpana pretends as if Dr Anil Gupta was a man of bad character to wriggle out of a tight situation. Later when Seema (Supriya Pathak)'s mother (played by Dina Pathak) finds out that she had lied about Dr. Anil. She remarks

ये लडकी तो पेट में दाढी रखती है

which is used to indicate a person who is precocious. Someone who looks young but shows the wisdom of an old person.

Jawaanii aur sharaafat meN kashmakash ho rahee hai

Spoken to : Daud Khan Yusufzai (Rishi Kapoor)

The featured line is from another BR Chopra film which came two decades later than the earlier featured line. Sultaanaa has been forcibly left in Daud's house by the local don (Kader Khan). Since he cannot get her out of his house, he is forced to tell neighbours that she is his wife. Sultaanaa is a 'tawaif' (a nautch girl) and is not used to men being polite to her. She finds the situation amusing and starts flirting with Daud. Daud tries to put up a curtain in the middle of the room - so that he can make a temporary 2 bedroom apartment. He sleeps in one portion on the floor - while Sultaanaa sleeps in the other portion on the bed. A flirtatious Sultaanaa, creeps through the curtain, and sees that Daud has not slept yet. She asks him why he is unable to sleep. Daud tries to ignore the question, but Sultaanaa persists with a provocative follow up question

YaheeN to maat khaa gayaa naa India

When I first saw this film on Doordarshan years back, I remember thinking to myself - Man! Smita Patil is for sure a good actress, but Rajesh Khanna is a very good actor himself! J Om Prakash (Hrithik's papa sasur) is famous for starting all his films with 'A' and for great music in his movies. It is rumoured that he earns over a couple of lacs every month just from the royalty of the music in his movies. This film too had good music, but it was a better film. This line is the 'takia kalaam' or pet phrase of Alok Nath (Rajesh Khanna) in this movie. Whenever he had to object to a particular statement or behaviour - he would interject and say

यहीं तो मात खा गया ना इंडिया

YaheeN to maat khaa gayaa naa India

I quite liked the way he said it. I have used it whenever a friend or a colleague has made emotional statements or cynical statements or despairing statement. In fact it can be used in any situation - India is quite a large and heterogeneous country. So if you want to disagree with a colleague or a friend or a relative who is an Indian, use this

यहीं तो मात खा गया ना इन्डिया

Incidentally this is the first Rajesh Khanna line featured on this blog. The original superstar thus makes his debut here.
