This was advertised as Mumtaz's last film (even the credit titles say so). And she did disappear after this film before reappearing almost 2 decades later in Aandhiyaan. The ichchhaadhaarii naag and naagin (serpents who can assume any form at will) are blessed with the ability to capture the image of their partner's killer in their eyes and do not rest till they eliminate them. So Reena Roy captures the image of these poor hunks in her mind, and eliminates them one by one. 

Her second last target is Raj. She assumes the form of a girl who could end up being Raj's wife. Although Raj is paranoid by now, having lost so many friends, the naagin still manages to trick him into believing that she is Rajkumari. She plants a poisonous kiss on Raj's lips. As his vision clouds, he tells her,

"tumhaaraa chehraa dhundhlaa dhundhlaa saa..."

She says

"tumhaarii aankho.n ke chiraaG zaraa dheeme paD gaye hai.n"

He has not yet realised, that he has been poisoned. He asks,

"kyo.n?"

She replies,

"muhabbat aur maut me.n yahii hotaa hai"

"मुहब्बत और मौत में यही होता है"

Death and love cloud the vision. Fantastic line.

Amit is a poet and he has gone to Pooja's college to recite his poetry. Pooja (among all the other girls) is enamoured of this tall, shy poet with a great voice. When she goes to take his autograph, he starts flirting with her. He praises her eyes. Pooja asks him what's so special about her eyes. A normal person would have been cornered by such a direct question. But Amit is a poet. So he comes up with a great response. He says,

"jahaa.n dekhtee hai.n ek rishtaa qaayam kar letii hai.n"
"जहां देखती हैं एक रिश्ता क़ायम कर लेती हैं"

On a lighter note, I used to wonder (and still do) about the way the title of the film was written. Why was the first 'Kabhi' written with just the 'i' and the second 'Kabhie' is written with 'ie'. Do write in and let me know, in case you know the answer.

Manoj Kumar has sued Farah and Shahrukh for misrepresenting him in OSO. If you want to see how sickening and stupid he looked, see this film. Crap film with some very good songs. But when a film is so bad you want to stick till the end a la Return of the Jewel Thief. And I think he should have paid Farah money for the service that she has done to him. Par woh kahaanii phir kabhee.

Arjun is a 'bad character' and Inspector Jaichand is a crooked police officer. In one exchange between the two, Arjun asks Jaichand for a 50% cut in the fake currency racket. Jaichand is angry that a petty crook considers himself worthy of equal profits. He says,

"Sher aur bakree donoN ek hee ghaaT se paanee naheeN peete"

"शेर और बकरी दोनों एक ही घाट से पानी नहीं पीते"

Aapkaa janeoo dikh rahaa hai

Ajay saves Asha from some goons who are trying to molest her. He manages to scare them off. However, the goons have torn Asha's clothes. And the audience can see the fat ugly bra strap that was common in the 1970s. But the line that Ajay delivers has to go down as a classic. He says

आपका जनेऊ दिख रहा है

Whenever I am faced with such a situation, I cannot but help remember this line. Whether I use it or not depends on how well I know the person in question. But the line crops up nonetheless and brings a smile to the face.

Nayaa khel nayee taash

The Big B is back. This time from the 1976 movie Hera Pheri. In the movie Amitabh plays a conman - Vijay who,along with his partner in crime Ajay (Vinod Khanna) run various scams. In one such scam, Vijay goes to a gambling house and sits down on a high stakes table to play cards. The table is classified as 'no limit' by Asrani, who is a regular patron in that place. When Asrani welcomes Vijay to the table, he says

"Partner, kyaa khayaal hai - naye mehmaan ke saath nayaa khel? No limits? Cut for deal..."

As he proffers the deck of cards, Vijay in that familiar baritone says

"No - nayaa khel nayee taash"

"No नया खेल नयी ताश"

And he asks for a new deck of cards. When you start a new venture, or you take over as the head of an existing venture, many a times you would like to make a new beginning in more ways than one. It could mean a new office, a new car, new staff or even a new mobile phone. Some people take this to excessive limits too. But nonetheless, whenever you are in a new place, and you are trying to get something new, use this line

"नया खेल नयी ताश "
